The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963

Curtis, C. P. (1995). The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963. New York: Yearling. Kenny Watson lives with his family in Flint, Michigan. His older brother, Byron is a juvenile delinquent who keeps getting in trouble so Mama and Papa decide that Byron will live with Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama. Life in Birmingham is difficult for blacks in 1963 in the mist of the Civil Rights Movement. A tragedy puts his little sister, Joetta, in danger and changes their lives forever. The setting of the story is well developed, and gives readers a glimpse of what life was like for blacks in Alabama in 1963. Readers are able to see that segregation was a big problem in the South, but not in other parts of the United States like Michigan.
